Development Associate

Summary

Spirit of America seeks a Development Associate (DA) to work in support of our development and fundraising activities. The Development Associate position requires teamwork, discretion, judgment, flexibility, and personal responsibility. As a member of a fast-paced, dynamic organization, the DA must be willing and able to perform a wide range of support functions to help ensure Spirit of America’s continued success in raising funds and expanding the organization’s base of donors and prospects. She or he should place a premium on the building of positive relationships with his or her team in the Arlington, VA office. The Development Associate must be able to prioritize and complete tasks without immediate follow-up by the supervisor, while also taking initiative to address needs as they arise.

This position provides an opportunity to support on organization that directly impacts US national security and foreign policy objectives. Without solid fundraising and development Spirit of America would be unable to provide our unique brand of support to the safety and success of Americans serving abroad and the local people and partners they seek to help.

The Position & Responsibilities

The Development Associate will report directly to the Development & Communications Manager and work in support of the entire development team, including the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Operating Officer (COO), and Major Gift Officers (MGOs). This is a full-time position based in the Arlington, VA office. Occasional domestic travel may be required.

The Development Associate will be primarily responsible for supporting SoA’s fundraising and donor stewardship activities, including: donor research, coordinating meetings, preparing SoA development executives for meetings, assist with grant writing and management, and other related tasks. The Development Associate will be the main person responsible for maintaining donor information in SoA’s Salesforce database.

The Development Associate will:

  • Assist the CEO and MGOs with donor relationship management through the solicitation cycle Arrange meetings with high-level donors, prospects, and advisors;
  • Ensure donor correspondence, donation information, and other details are properly captured in our Salesforce donor management database;
  • Provide detailed research to support development efforts to include prospect bios, giving histories, interests, associations, etc;
  • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of donor cultivation and/or solicitation meetings and fundraising events;
  • Coordinate flight and other travel arrangements for development personnel;
  • Assist the Development & Communications Manager with donor outreach through social media, mass email, direct mailing, and other means;
  • Assist in production of foundation proposals and grant reports;
  • Be willing to take on additional tasks as needed in order to promote the success of SoA 

Experience and Qualifications

Education: At a minimum, applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree.

Experience: Applicant must have a minimum of two-years of post-college experience. Fundraising or nonprofit work is preferred. US Military Veterans are highly encouraged to apply. Previous non-profit and fundraising experience is a plus.

Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills, a strong attention to detail, and excellent organizational skills are required. Basic computer and social media literacy are required, including competency in Microsoft Office suite, Gmail, Google Apps, and Salesforce or other CRM software. Knowledge and/or experience with Adobe, and Box is a plus.

Personal Qualities The Development Associate’s personal qualities are as important as his/her résumé and professional qualifications. She or he must be a friendly, outgoing, natural relationship builder. The Development Associate needs to have exemplary patience and outstanding listening skills. Spirit of America is a small, dynamic, and often geographically dispersed organization. The Development Associate must be able to operate without direct supervision and balance multiple tasks simultaneously for MGOs and staff that are working remotely and in various time zones. Prioritization, communication, and responsiveness are key to success in this position.
