Position: Major Gift Officer

Spirit of America seeks a US military veteran as a Major Gift Officer to expand the organization’s base of donors and prospects. This is a front-line fundraising role for someone with a strong interest in national security, military affairs and foreign policy and a deep commitment to the safety and success of America’s troops. The position entails building new, as well as maintaining existing, relationships with foundations and high net worth individuals. The Major Gift Officer will report to Spirit of America's Chief Executive Officer.

Spirit of America (SoA) is a 501c3 nonprofit charity that supports the safety and success of Americans serving abroad and the local people and partners they seek to help. We provide assistance in response to needs identified by American military and civilian personnel. We add the agility, innovation, and resources of the American private sector to the capabilities of the US government and military in support of US missions abroad.

Spirit of America support makes US troops and diplomats safer and more successful in their missions and helps local people suffering from conflict and extremism who are often not reached by large-scale aid programs. Spirit of America provides the American people a way to understand, connect with, and support the vital work of US personnel serving abroad.

Spirit of America is funded entirely by private contributions from individuals, foundations, and businesses. SoA has raised more than $22 million in donations from more than 17,000 individual donors. With SoA’s “100% Promise” donors may earmark their donations, and 100 percent of their gift will be used for the direct expenses of the project they specify. Since SoA’s founding, 81 percent of the organization’s expenditures have gone to program expenses.

Key Responsibilities
The Major Gift Officer will:

  • Be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gifts of $10,000 and higher;
  • Actively build a major gift prospect portfolio with the goal of carrying approximately 125 major gift prospects in active solicitation cycle;
  • Cultivate 20-30 existing major donors to renew and increase their annual gifts;
  • Re-engage and cultivate 20-30 lapsed or emerging prospects who are no longer or not yet giving consistently at the $10,000 level;
  • Identify 20-30 new prospects who are not yet qualified and cultivate as eventual major gift prospects;
  • Oversee all aspects of each major gift prospect’s relationship and timely movement through the solicitation cycle, in coordination with other team members as appropriate, with a focus on moving to a major gift proposal;
  • Monitor all prospect contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations;
  • Lead and/or attend donor cultivation and/or solicitation meetings and plan/execute fundraising events;
  • Work collaboratively and strategically with SoA staff and Board members;
  • Participate in and contribute substantively to organizational strategy and planning sessions.

Candidate qualifications and qualities
A Bachelor’s degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred. A strong interest in national security and prior service in the US military are also required. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A dynamic, professional, collaborative demeanor;
  • A positive, organized, team-oriented approach to problem solving;
  • A track record of building a prospect pool, cultivating donor relationships and closing gifts in the five- and six-figure range;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills in both one-on-one and group settings;
  • An ability to articulate and present clear, persuasive written and verbal communications;
  • Poise and presence that inspires confidence in both internal and external audiences of all levels;
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, and daily operations within a development office, including: discovering and qualifying prospects and donors; initiating contact and tracking outreach; developing creative and effective solicitation strategies; moving prospects and donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation; effective solicitation and gift closure; and stewardship;
  • A passion for advancing Spirit of America’s mission and evangelizing the organization’s unique model of private support to US missions abroad;
  • Flexibility and willingness to engage in weekend/evening meetings and undertake regional and national travel up to 35% of the time.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and Salesforce.
